Reception Teacher Miss Dawson
Welcome to your new school! I have been very lucky to already have met most of you and I am very excited about teaching you for your first year at Lower Peover.
As most of you know my name is Miss Dawson. Miss Robson will also be working with us from Monday to Thursday and on a Friday Miss Watson will come and join us in our class. Some other special people will also help us with some of our learning throughout the week as well. Coach Dave will do PE sessions and sometimes your parents or members of your family will be invited to come and join in with our fun sessions. On a Wednesday Mrs Court will come in and do some singing and music activities, she is lots of fun and I know that this will be something you will really enjoy.
I can’t wait to get to know you all and find out about the things you like. Miss Robson and I will use your interests and ideas to plan our learning and activities so every day will be different, fun and exciting. We will start with the theme ‘Ourselves’ so we can get to know each other and then our learning will be led from your interests.
Our classroom has lots of different areas of learning both inside and outside. Inside we have a reading area (very cosy!), construction area (with block play and smaller construction),a role play corner (made from big blocks), messy area (for junk modelling, painting, dough and anything else we might want to create), a writing area (this has a school desk in it at the moment if any of you would like to have a go at being a teacher!), maths area (there might be some pictures in there you might recognise!) an investigative area, an activity table (for jigsaws, games etc)and computers (we will also be using the ipads). Outside there is a shed and a set of drawers which you will be able to get things you might need for your learning. We will have some bikes and wheeled toys, sand, water, large construction, a quiet area, music stand and a mud kitchen. Later last year we also added a little shed, it has lots of things which you can use to play ‘house’ or ‘families’. We are also very lucky to have an outdoor classroom in the woods so we will try and use this as much as we can. We will also try and use the climbing frame as much as we can too, not just at playtimes!
Starting school is a very exciting time, it might also be a little scary but Miss Robson and I will look after you and help you to settle in so there is nothing to worry about. We are really looking forward to helping make your first year at Lower Peover fun and happy, supporting your learning and being part of all the new experiences you will have. See you in September in your brand new uniform and shiny shoes – don’t forget your wellies!
Parents – Miss Robson and I look forward to meeting you (if we haven’t already) and getting to know you over the year. Your child’s learning will mainly be captured through observations and some work will also be evidenced in books. In Reception we encourage children to choose work they are proud of to display and each child will be given their own space to do this. Work produced linked to any of the themes we cover (linked to children’s interests) will be displayed and we also have designated displays for English, Maths and creative work which are changed regularly. To capture each child’s learning we use an online website and app called Tapestry to record observations, this means that we can share your child’s learning with you as it happens and you can also send us pictures to show your child’s learning and experiences at home. (More information about this will be given through a meeting and written correspondence.)
As you may already be aware, the Reception curriculum is based around Development Matters. At the end of the Reception Year children are expected to be achieving the Early Learning Goal (there is also an exceeding statement for each area of learning), however we are committed to ensuring that every child makes progress from their starting point as they enter Reception.
We are committed in involving you in your child’s learning, therefore in addition to Tapestry we hold a monthly play and stay session on a Monday afternoon (dates can be found on the website calendar) and invite Guest readers in every Friday afternoon. (Guest reader can be parents, relatives or close family friends and if you are interested in this please speak to Miss Robson or myself.)
Every year we are very lucky to have the support of parents in school to hear readers or practise number bonds. The extra help we receive really supports the children in developing their reading and number skills and it is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in being a Parent Helper please speak to a member of staff.
